My school class was on a study tour to Nordens Ark ( a "zoo" for overarching goal to provide a future for endangered animals, in Sweden) some days ago an I took a lot of pictures of the animals.
In the wild there are two main wild populations – one on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan and one in northeast China, Russia and Mongolia.
Human expansion has also greatly reduced the species' natural areas. Large dam construction work drain the areas along the coast that are important wintering areas for the cranes. Intensive hunting has been going on for the beautiful plumage sake.
With a high of 150 cm is the Red-crowned crane not a particularly easy prey for predators. On the other hand, the size of the Red-crowned crane makes it very heavy and slow in flight, and "air accident" happens every now and then.
